The Mental Toughness Program


 
Athletes
The program covers key areas for athletes:

  • Activation control to stay calm under pressure
  • Relaxation and the importance of breath
  • Effective goal setting that aligns to team goals
  • Visualization/Imagery
  • Self-talk control and the power of beliefs/self-limiting beliefs
  • Emotional IQ
  • Increasing commitment levels

The athletes on a team also need to excel at effective team functioning by building:

  • Conflict Resolution skills
  • Effective Listening skills
  • Effective Team processes
  • Team Cohesion
  • Leadership skills

Coaches need to understand the pillars of the program so that they can incorporate them into their daily coaching and team culture. Coaches need to be effective leaders by articulating the team culture and goals so that skaters know where they are headed.
 

The Program
 
The Mental Toughness Program is a three part program.

 

1)  A 6 hour workshop done by a lead trainer on site. Workshops are typically done over a weekend with skaters. A one hour coach training precedes the 'skater workshop'. The workshop consists of hands on training, interactive games and role-play to bring the content alive. Skaters are challenged to get to know their thinking patterns and act as a leader as they learn the principles of mental toughness.  This program is fun and interactive for skaters. It goes beyond the challenges on the ice and serves to teach life long lessons that athletes will carry with them as they start college and career pursuits. The content is tailored to the age and ability of the team.

2)  Pre-workshop interview with head coach to customize the workshop content. The team coach articulates the team’s Vision, Goals and current commitment levels.

3)  A 6 month goal setting and successful habits program is included in this Mental Toughness Program. The goal and successful habits program ensures that what is learned in the live workshop will be put into daily practice and be incorporated into the team culture. This includes:

  • Monthly skaters' goal worksheets
  • Coaches' success charting
  • “Snap jars”
  • Post-season individual assessment forms
  • On ice reminders


 In addition, 2 hours of post-workshop phone consultation with the lead trainer is included in this program to help implement the new practices into your Synchronized skating program.
